Famous Women Photographer Turns 100 This Month

Famous Photographer Turns 100 Years Old-- Editta Sherman

Editta Sherman is known as the Duchess of Carnegie will be 100 years old soon. Chris Gregory wrote an article for the Lens Blog Section of the New York Times what a remarkable women and photographer Ms. Sherman is.

She was born in 1912 to Italian immigrants. She is called the Duchess of Carnegie because she had a large photography studio in the Carnegie Hall in New York City in 1949. There she photographed many famous people. Over the years she photographed many well known actors such as: Charlton Heston, Christopher Plummer, Bela Lugosi and Henry Fonda.

Her father was a photographer as well and in the beginning of her career she also was a child and family photographer like her dad. The major change of her life took place in the 1930s in Martha’s Vineyard when she photographed Frank Morgan who played the lead role in The Wizard of Oz. She enjoyed creating distinctive photographic studies with these famous people each summer when she stayed in Martha's Vineyard, which is in Massachusetts.

Ms. Sherman had a retrospective of her entire body of work at 25 CPW Gallery in New York City on July 10, 2012. It was a wonderful tribute to this incredible photographer who was born 100 years ago on July 9, 1912.
